Thanks to those who helped with race
On Saturday Sept. 24, 2016, the 8th Annual 1LT Mark Dooley 5K Race and Kids Fun Run was held in Wilmington. The event is a living tribute to Mark Dooley, a former Wilmington resident, police officer, and Vermont Army National Guard soldier, who was killed in action on Sept. 19, 2005 while deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Many thanks are owed to the generous event sponsors, supporters, volunteers, and race participants who unite in support of this cause each year.
The event is a special day of remembrance for a young man who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. In addition to the 5K Walk and 5K Run, the Kids Fun Run has been a growing and endearing success. The day was made special by the presence of a world renowned bagpiper, Campbell Webster, live music, courtesy of Welkin Again, abundant support by local law enforcement, Deerfield Valley Rescue, and the Deerfield Valley Rotary. Those in attendance enjoyed a delicious breakfast, made possible by Chef Joseph Gerardi and many hardworking volunteers and donors.
Proceeds of the event benefit the 1LT Mark Dooley Memorial/Scholarship Fund. Each year a graduating student of the Twin Valley Middle High School is selected as the recipient of the 1LT Dooley Award and Scholarship. This year's recipient was Theresa Snow. Theresa is presently attending Southern Maine Community College for Fire Science, and she intends to pursue a Paramedic License. The Dooley fund also donates annually in Mark's name to the Vermont National Guard Charitable Foundation, the Twin Valley Middle High School Athletics program, Twin Valley Youth Sports, and other student organizations.
The 9th Annual Race will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017. Please visit www.markdooley5k.com for information and to see a list of our wonderful 2016 sponsors. Please subscribe to our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MarkDooley5K.
