A costly reappraisal?

The town of Pownal began a full reappraisal of properties in 2009, and after three extensions the reappraisal was completed in 2011.

A record number (280) appeals were filed with the Listers. Fifty-five of the appeals were denied, at least seven of the appeals were increased and the rest were given reductions from minor ($3,300) to substantial ($177,200).

Forty-two appeals were filed with the Board of Civil Authority. Seven withdrew their appeals, nine were denied and the rest received reductions of various amounts.

Nine properties were appealed to the state appraisers. Five were unchanged (denied) and four were reduced. One other appeal is still in the court.

The cost of the reappraisal, the number of hours spent by the Listers and BCA officials to hear these appeals make this the most expensive reappraisal ever for the town of Pownal.

The "domino" effect is now in place.

Time will tell if it happens.

Join me in voting for Sorrell

I have known and worked with Bill Sorrell for more than 22 years as a deputy sheriff, police officer and police chief, during which time he has shown tremendous leadership as Vermont’s top law enforcement officer.

When the use of Tasers was called into question, Sorrell did a comprehensive report which included recommendations on training, protocols and deployment. He provided leadership and counsel on the development of a statewide model Bias-Free Policing Policy, which many Vermont police agencies have since adopted.

He has provided important and defining leadership on every major public safety issues of our time, and continues to work hard on matters that every Vermonter should care about, from protecting our children from on-line predators, our elderly from scam artists and other abuses, and prosecuting Vermont’s most violent criminals.

We need Bill’s leadership, wisdom and experience as our Attorney General, so he has my vote on Aug. 28. I urge you all to join me in supporting Bill Sorrell by giving him your vote.
