BENNINGTON -- Halloween is going to the dogs.
At least, that was the case on Friday evening, when the West Mountain Animal Hospital held its annual Halloween Dog Costume Party. The hour-long event featured breeds of all shapes and sizes, showing off their Halloween duds.
Charlene Mischon, director of doggie daycare at the hospital, played a large role in organizing the event.
The show was stolen by Weego, a 2-year-old flat-coated retriever, whose fire-dog costume was declared best in show by a panel of judges. Weego attends doggie daycare "religiously," according to Mischon.
Dogs dressed like a member of the Boston Red Sox and a glowworm came in second and third places, respectively. Honorable mentions included canines dressed as a lion, a doctor, Miss America, a construction worker, and a pair of dogs dressed as Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Other costumes included a pilgrim, a "motor mutt," and several princesses.
Several buckets were set up for the dogs to go bobbing for apples, but none of the dogs really took to the party game, preferring to drink the water instead. But while the dogs' apple-bobbing skills were lacking, the creative skills of their owners were on full display.
