BENNINGTON -- The Mount Anthony Union school board voted 5-3 Wednesday increase the salary for athletic trainer Jeff Wood.
When Wood was hired six years ago, the position was newly created, according to MAU Activities Director Tim Brown. At the time, the board decided the starting salary would be $30,000 and cap off at $45,000.
Wood currently makes $44,990 annually. However, with the rising cost of living in the state and across the country over the past six years, and an imminent 2 percent raise which would result in an annual salary of $45,889, it was necessary to adjust Wood’s earnings accordingly, so as to not surpass the previously agreed upon salary range.
During the meeting, Brown handed out information that put the average salary in 2011 for an athletic trainer in New England at $51,886.
The board also voted unanimously Wednesday to hire longtime MAUMS Paraprofessional Kelly Brooks as an assistant middle school boys soccer coach.
The need for an additional coach came about earlier this season, according to Brown, when a total of 30 boys signed up to play, as opposed to an average of 12 to 18 boys in past years.
Brown favored hiring an assistant coach as opposed to splitting the team in two, as the district has a general policy of maintaining a ratio of one coach to every 20 players with any contact sport.
Brooks will now earn an additional $925.99 per season on top of his current salary.
