BENNINGTON -- Meet Geoff Smith, the Banner's new assistant sports editor. He started at the Banner on August 12, just in time for the fall sports season to begin at the five local high schools.
A native of Whately, Mass., Smith is graduate of The Williston Northampton School in Easthampton, Mass., where he played football and basketball and was on the track team, and earned a bachelor of arts in print journalism with a minor in history from Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.
"My junior year of high school I started to write for the school paper. I remember writing about a girl scoring her thousandth point for basketball ... and I was hooked," he said.
Smith came to us from the Berkshire Record, a weekly newspaper, in Great Barrington, Mass., where he was sports editor. Here at the Banner, Smith works closely with Banner Sports Editor Adam Samrov to report local sports news, take photos and videos, put sports content on social media and our website, and design the print pages of the daily Banner Sports section.
A new resident of North Bennington, Smith has found the Bennington area and Vermont in general to be "very welcoming. I've enjoyed what little time I've spent here so far," he said.
Outside of watching and covering sports, Smith says he does a lot of reading, likes to get outdoors and explore the mountains, and enjoys playing video games.
Asked what are his favorite subjects to write about, Smith said, "I like to write about soccer. But really, I like to write about high school sports in general. I think everybody is ready for high school sports to begin. Everybody is ready for that first football game to start -- me included."
Smith's favorite professional sports teams are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Boston Celtics, the Boston Red Sox and "hockey, in general." Soccer is a particular passion, with Manchester United topping Smith's list of favorite teams.
"I am a big soccer guy," he said. "I am looking forward to covering soccer and football this fall. Everything that goes into high school football is enjoyable, and part of that is they play just for their pride."
He added, "There's something about going out to a football game on a Friday night."
