VAE Open Studio Art Camp
NORTH BENNINGTON. -- It’s time to make vacation plans! April school vacation week is right around the corner, but there’s still time to make sure your child has a fun, inspiring school break immersed in the arts. Register now for Vermont Arts Exchange’s special Vacation Week Open Studio Art Camp in VAE’s Sage Street Mill studios, Monday to Friday, April 15-19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
VAE’s Open Studio Art Camp is one of VAE’s most popular -- and fun! -- programs. With artist-instructor Ann Webster-Lang, students ages 6-12 are exposed to a wide variety of materials, tools and supplies not often found in other art programs. Campers get the chance to work both individually and in groups, and are encouraged to try new things.
As campers work at their own pace throughout the week, structured activities and themes act as guides -- and freedom of expression is encouraged. Students experiment and work with wood shop tools, mixed media and recycled material, plaster, wood, fiber, drawing materials, acrylic paint, watercolor, oil pastel and chalk pastel. Weather permitting, the group heads outdoors to explore the VAE grounds -- the "outdoor studio."
Tuition for this Open Studio Art Camp is $185 per week. Campers should bring lunch, a snack and clothing that can get messy.
Spring sing and dance classes offered in Weston
WESTON -- The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company is offering two classes this spring which are sure to chase away the winter blues. On a series of five Tuesdays, from April 23 to May 21, students in grades 4-8 are invited to participate in "Broadway Bound"; and adults are encouraged to sign up for "Community Cabaret." Both classes will be held in the theatre’s rehearsal space on Main Street in Weston and taught by Broadway performer and Weston favorite Susan Haefner.
Broadway Bound is designed for kids who love to perform. Time will be allocated to singing, dancing and acting -- as all three skills are necessary if one is to journey from Vermont to the Great White Way. Learning songs and dances from popular Broadway musicals, students will develop confidence, learn how to project, and get a taste of what it’s like to be a future Broadway star. Tuesdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. $85.
Community Cabaret is designed for adults with a dose of post-winter cabin fever and at least a smidge of talent. Susan, who has directed cabarets for the Weston Playhouse, will lead class participants as they choose material, learn songs, develop skits, dig up props and basically just have a lot of laughs. If the class so chooses, a sixth session can be added and friends can be invited to a performance not to be missed! Tuesdays from 7 to 8:45 p.m.
Classes start April 23. Registration is requested by April 10. Class size is limited, so sign up today. A registration form can be downloaded on our website, westonplayhouse.org
