NORTH BENNINGTON -- Bennington College will celebrate the opening of its first exhibition of the year, "Uniting States of Americans," a presentation by Cynthia Weber that documents and juxtaposes two of the most significant periods in recent American history, with a reception tonight, Tuesday, Sept. 11, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the College's Usdan Gallery. The exhibit will be on view through Oct. 18.
The exhibition, which includes a series of films, photographs, and textual vignettes from Weber's coverage of post-9/11 America and of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Weber, a professor of International Relations at Sussex University, England, and documentary filmmaker, will discuss her work during a lunch conversation in Usdan on Wednesday, Sept. 12, from 12:15 to 1:45 p.m. Lunch will be served.
On the same night as the exhibit opening, Davy Rothbart, editor of FOUND Magazine and frequent contributor to NPR's "This American Life," is bringing FOUND Magazine's 10th Anniversary Tour to Bennington College, tonight, Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 9 p.m., at the Student Center. Rothbart is appearing with his brother, Peter Rothbart, an accomplished musician.
"Every couple of years, I hit the road with my brother Peter, a singer/songwriter, for a nationwide tour, where we perform an energetic reading/music show at theaters, rock clubs, bookstores, museums, art spaces, colleges and universities," Davy wrote in supplied material. "At these shows, I read Found notes and also my stories and personal essays (the kind of pieces I do for ‘This American Life') and Peter plays songs based on some of the Found notes."
According to supplied material, Davy also has a new book of personal essays called "My Heart is an Idiot," which comes out this week from Farrar, Straus, & Giroux (it's already been dubbed "achingly funny" by The New York Times). The annual FOUND show is always unique, memorable, and very entertaining -- the Los Angeles Times calls Davy & Peter Rothbart "utterly engaging performers."
