In Bennington House District 2-1, local voters have three excellent candidates running, incumbent Democrats Timothy Corcoran and Brian Campion and Republican challenger Warren Roaf, a former principal of Mount Anthony Union Middle School and longtime teacher in local schools.

Mr. Corcoran is seeking a sixth term in the Legislature and is a member of the House Transportation Committee. He has spoken of his work on the committee as the state struggled to rebuild its infrastructure after Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, and of his support for the complete, three-section Route 279 project.

Mr. Campion is seeking a second term and is a member of the House Education Committee. He was a proponent of the new law that will allow the governor to select a Secretary of Education from candidates vetted by the state Board of Education.

He also has been a vigorous supporter of Governor Peter Shumlin's single-payer health care plan for Vermont.

Mr. Roaf said during the campaign that his experience with school budgets could help in considering the state budget proposals, and he cited an endorsement from the National Education Association.

The former principal is, however, running in a two-seat district with two effective incumbents, both of whom deserve re-election.

The two Democrats, members of a party that is likely to have a large House majority working with a Democratic governor, also are in a position to deliver more for Bennington residents in the coming legislative session.

For these reasons, the Banner recommends the re-election of Reps. Campion and Corcoran.

In House District 2-2, incumbents Mary Morrissey, a Republican, and Anne Mook, a Democrat, face Democratic challenger Dale Gerrity for two district seats.

The two incumbents have displayed a much greater grasp of issues and experience and should be returned to new terms on Nov. 6.
