Going into the Town Council races in Hoosick on Nov. 3, the challengers were given only a small chance by most observers of ousting the incumbents - longtime Hoosick Supervisor Marilyn Douglas and councilors Kevin O'Malley and Mark Cottrell. But that is exactly what happened.

By decisive, if not landslide margins, Keith Cipperly defeated Mrs. Douglas, and Jeff Wysocki and Louis Schmigel were elected to the board over Mr. O'Malley and Mr. Cottrell. The winners in this election were all Republicans, those defeated were long-serving Democrats.

What this election says more than anything is that, when voters are ready for a change, it just happens. And that, as in sports, the champion almost always looks unbeatable until that beating is delivered by an upstart.

Whether the newcomers will serve as long or as honorably and effectively as those they have replaced remains to be seen. But they have their chance now, courtesy of Hoosick voters. They should always remember, therefore, who, ultimately, is the boss.

We wish the new supervisor and council members luck and offer a well-deserved pat on the back for those who lost, but only after years of service to the town. And for now, the people have spoken and any lingering animosity from the tough campaign should be dropped and those now on the board given cooperation and assistance - at least until the next election.
