With the graduation of 229 seniors from Mount Anthony Union High School on Friday, most Bennington County secondary school grads are poised to learn — as soon as the parties wind down — that the age of life-path decisions is upon them.

Actually, we know that many in their late teens, on up to late 20s and beyond, won't really face tough life decisions for a few more years — depending upon the level of indulgence and economic status of the parents.

But anyone beyond age 30, at the least, knows that either the dreams of youth are aggressively pursued — and there is a modicum of good luck — or those dreams will, one by one, begin to fade into a dimly lit past.

Today's deep recession complicates every upcoming choice for many, of course, and it will force hard life choices earlier rather than later for the vast majority.

Some will retreat into a comfort cocoon supplied by their parents and family, either at home or on a series of college campuses. That certainly is understandable given the harsh employment and workplace climate recent grads of any age now face. The standard of living they are accustomed to is out of reach for most people starting out — without a financial boost from Mom and Dad.

Yet, as always throughout history, it will be those who are willing to do without the comfort and toys of childhood, those with a hunger inside that makes them focus instead on

some future goal, who will be remembered — and talked about, with jealousy or awe — come reunion time.

Just keep in mind that the class of 2009 has its many dreams, and a few of them — perhaps yours — will come true.
