The Republicans this week staged a legislative coup in that chamber, where the Democrats had acquired a slim majority in the November elections for the first time in four decades.
But some politicians being what they are, two Democrats were persuaded to flip on the issue of control of the Senate, voting along with the Republicans to hand them back control of the chamber by a 32-30 margin. Apparently, that is.
The change is dependent upon the result of a threatened lawsuit from Democrats and whatever other parliamentarian maneuvering comes down the pike such as a lockout of coup members by the Democrats. Stay tuned.
The leaders of this banana republic-worthy coup, who say they are reformers fighting overspending and taxing by the Democrats, were assisted when one Democrat developed legal troubles and another violated election laws. All in all, not a pretty picture.
Meanwhile, only eight full days are left in the session for New York's part-time legislature, and important bills, such as proposed legalization of same-sex marriage, are standing on the sidelines while the august senators brawl.
If these people were athletes, we would have to recommend immediate testing
