Kindergarten registration
DORSET Dorset School Kindergarten registration and screening will take place. Call 362-2606 to make an appointment to register one's child. Children entering Kindergarten for the 2008-2009 school year must be five years old by Sept. 1. Bring your child's immunization records and birth certificate.
Transition night
BENNINGTON At 6:30 p.m. there will be a transition night for all parents of rising 9th graders presented by Mount Anthony Union High School guidance counselors. It will take place in the Middle School cafeteria. School personnel will guide parents through requirements and give them tips for success over the next four years. Refreshments will be served.
Pre-school story hour
BENNINGTON A pre-school story hour will be held from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. for children 3 to 5 upstairs at Bennington Free Library. Children will explore the world of literature through stories, songs, movement and art. For more information, call Linda or Chris at 442-9051.

Veterans benefits meetings
BENNINGTON Sam Haskins, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders' veterans outreach representative, will hold informational meetings in Bennington County on May 27, 28 and 29 to explain how to enroll for VA health care. With the new VA health clinic on North Street in Bennington, Haskins will describe the services available there and how to access them.
These informal meetings are free and open to Vermont veterans, spouses, dependents, widows and widowers. Following the presentation, Haskins will be available to meet individually with any veteran or family members who has personal concerns.
To apply for VA health care at the meeting, attendees need to bring a copy of their Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD Form 214) form, income documents for their household from all sources for 2007, along with medical expense documents for themselves and their spouse during 2007.

Hazardous waste collection
BENNINGTON A free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be held on Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bennington Transfer Station on Houghton Lane. This is for residents of Bennington and Woodford.
Shaftsbury waste disposal days
SHAFTSBURY The Town of Shaftsbury will be holding Free Metal Week, Free Tire Day and Household Hazardous Waste Day at the town transfer station and recycling center, 526 North Road.
Shaftsbury, Pownal and Stamford residents are invited to participate in Household Hazardous Waste Day on Saturday, June 21, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. No latex paint will be accepted.
Only Shaftsbury residents are invited to participate in Free Metal Week and Free Tire Day. Free Metal Week will be held on Tuesday, June 17; Thursday, June 19; and Saturday, June 21.
Free Tire Day will be held on Saturday, June 21, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Organizers will be accepting only 4 tires without rims from per household.
Shaftsbury residents with current 2006-2007 landfill permits may participate in this free service. For more information, call 442-4043 or visit www.shaftsbury.net.
Birdhouse exhibition benefits RAHC
BENNINGTON A collection of innovative birdhouses will be unveiled at the Bennington Center for the Arts next week.
With the idea that "every creature deserves a cozy nest," the goal of the exhibition is to raise funds for the Regional Affordable Housing Corporation and to raise awareness of RAHC's mission.
The collection of birdhouses will begin a summer-long tour of sponsoring businesses in Bennington and Manchester following the kick-off event at the Bennington Center for the Arts on May 16, which starts at 5 p.m. On June 26, a similar event will be held at the Southern Vermont Arts Center.
The series of displays will culminate with an auction in Manchester on Sept. 5.
In addition to the Bennington Banner and the Manchester Journal, sponsors include the Bennington Center for the Arts, The Equinox Resort, The Perfect Wife Tavern and Restaurant, r.k. Miles, Inc., the Southern Vermont Arts Center, the Spiral Press Cafe at the Northshire Bookstore and the Wills Insurance Co.
