Bennington >> On Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. admission to the Bennington Museum is free for all visitors.
Join us for a day of celebrating art as you enjoy Milton Avery's Vermont exhibition featuring work created by this great American Modernist based on his summers spent in Southern Vermont between 1935 and 1943. The exhibition brings together, for the first time, dozens of the paintings, watercolors, and drawings Avery made on family visits to the West River Valley region of Vermont.
At 3 p.m. join with artist Leslie Parke in the Regional Artists Gallery for an artist's reception celebrating her exhibition Particle/Wave: Photographs by Leslie Parke. On view will be a selection of her large-scale photographs. "My approach remains largely that of a painter. I want the photograph to look like a painting and be responded to as a painting. I looked at archival inkjet printers as a new painting medium. There are things they can do that you cannot do in paint, and they offer colors that have a kind of luminosity you don't always find in oils. I was interested in the way the ink reacted to the watercolor-like paper, and how one can achieve a density in the black that is not always possible in paint.
During the day there will be "Watercolor Creations" for the young and young-at-heart. Become inspired by the art in the galleries and then create your own watercolor. Combine this with the exhibitions including Duane Michals, Photographs from the Floating World. Add in the museum's galleries filled with history such as the Bennington Battle Gallery, Gilded Age Vermont, Bennington Modernism and you have hours (or a day) filled with art, history and innovation.
If you want to get outdoors, take a walk on the George Aiken Wildflower Trail where a new Trail Tale has been installed. Designed for the younger folks, enjoy "Possum's Harvest Moon," by local author/illustrator Anne Hunter. Walk the trail and enjoy stopping at each post for another bit from this wonderful book.
