BENNINGTON >> The transition between pre kindergarten and kindergarten is an important milestone for children and families. For many children, it is their first introduction to a school where they will spend the majority of their waking hours for the first six years of their school. A workgroup in the Bennington region including kindergarten teachers, Head Start, community partners such as Building Bright Futures, and Pre-k teachers and parents have been working to make the transition to kindergarten a positive process for children, families, and schools. The kindergarten transition work being done in Bennington has been recognized as a model for schools around the state on March 25 at the 24th Annual Vermont Kindergarten Conference in Burlington, sponsored by the Agency of Education, the University of Vermont, and VAEYC.
The Bennington area workgroup began transition planning in the fall of 2015 in preparation for the incoming kindergarten class for the fall of 2016. Kindergarten transition activities include a number of activities and events for teachers, children and families. For teachers, transition activities include an opportunity to learn about the learning styles, strengths and individual needs of each learner entering his or her class. For children, transition activities include an opportunity to see his or her new classroom and meet the teacher before the first day of school. For families, the transition process helps to answer questions many parents have such as,"What can I expect on the first day of school? Are there before and after care programs at my school? What can I do to ensure my child is prepared for kindergarten?" while also providing a connection with their new school and teacher to provide a resource to answer questions as they arise.
Parents of children who will be five years old by August 31 who would like to learn more about transitioning to kindergarten or to schedule a developmental screening can call the early education program office at 802-447-8419; or parents may contact your child's elementary school for more information.
