MONTPELIER >> Vermont is home to thousands of active nonprofit organizations – from animal shelters to soup kitchens to art galleries – and their work touches the lives of all Vermonters. Beyond the vital services they provide, these organizations manage billions of dollars in assets and employ tens of thousands of people throughout the state. The Attorney General's Office has the primary responsibility for ensuring that these nonprofits, especially those with a public, charitable mission, work for the public good and act in accordance with Vermont law.

Attorney General Bill Sorrell has announced the release of a guidebook that provides practical information to the board members who run these organizations to help them better navigate their work. "Understand Your Responsibilities: Guidance for Board Members of Charitable Nonprofit Organizations in Vermont," gives current and prospective board members an overview of their legal and ethical responsibilities, along with best practices for all nonprofit boards. The guide is available on the Attorney General's website.


"Vermont's nonprofits are a cornerstone of what makes our state great and unique," said Sorrell. "The dedicated work of countless volunteer boards keep these organizations running, and though my office has primary responsibility in enforcing the law, I think it is equally important that we provide guidance to help these boards operate so they fulfill their legal duties and can focus on carrying out the important work of their organizations."

The guide is primarily aimed at individuals currently serving on boards, or considering serving on a board, but can be helpful to experienced nonprofit professionals, as well. In the coming months, the Attorney General's Office will provide additional resources to the nonprofit sector, both on its website and through public presentations.
