BENNINGTON -- The Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) Echocardiography Laboratory earned the top accreditation in Adult Transthoracic Echocardiography from the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). The 3-year term of accreditation is the gold standard in cardiac imaging. It reflects the SVMC Hospital Cardiology Laboratory’s excellence across a thorough review of its operational and technical components by a panel of experts. Now, both the echocardiography laboratories at SVMC, and the practice of Dr. Rogge and Dr. Anisman have earned this accreditation.

"We want our patients to understand our commitment to the quality of their cardiac care," said Dr. Scott Rogge, SVMC’s medical director for cardiology. "Echocardiography is our taking detailed pictures of your heart in motion so we can make sure everything’s working just right."

The panel of experts evaluates the quality of the administering technicians, the type and caliber of the test equipment, the background and knowledge of the test’s interpreting physician, and the quality and detail of records.

The IAC grants accreditation only to those facilities that are found to be providing quality patient care in compliance with national standards through a comprehensive application process including detailed case study review.

Echocardiography accreditation is required in some states and regions by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), as well as by some private insurers like Aetna.

This accreditation from the IAC is the "seal of approval" patients can rely on that a facility has been carefully critiqued across all aspects of those operations considered relevant by medical experts in the field of echocardiography. In Bennington, Nancy Young and Cynthia Martin, with a combined 45 years of echocardiography technician experience at SVMC, know how important the test is for patients. "We take what we do seriously. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the US," says Young. Martin said, "We run a tight ship by keeping meticulous patient records, double checking every reading, investing in a high-level of continued education, and keeping patient experience as our top goal."

"Earning this accreditation is just an example of our commitment to excellent cardiology," said Rogge. "We’re always looking for ways to excel; and demonstrate that excellence. Our patients’ cardiac health is worth it."
