The Stone Valley Byway (VT Route 30) in western Vermont, running from Hubbardton to Manchester along steep mountain ranges and a vibrant agricultural valley floor, is known for its exceptional natural, scenic, and recreational attractions.
Now there’s yet another reason to take a drive along the Byway today: To see one of the state’s newest attractions.
A series of five striking stone monuments containing interpretive panels are in place along the Byway in Castleton, Rupert, Poultney, Wells and Manchester. They’re designed to commemorate the marble and slate quarries which shaped this region’s rich history and which continue to be important today -- economically, historically and recreationally.
In 2010, a Byways grant application for the interpretive panels was submitted to the Federal Highway Administration by the Rutland Regional Planning Commission on behalf of the Stone Valley Byway Advisory Committee, which is made up of town representatives.
The slate and marble used are native to the town in which they are located and the monuments’ panels highlight the history of the town. The markers are topped off with an identifying capstone.
Susan Schreibman, assistant director of the RRPC and project manager for this Stone Valley Byway project said "These panels tell the story of the Stone Valley Byway -- from the material used and information displayed, to the people who live here and generously donated to their community.
In Castleton and Rupert, the slate stone was donated by Charles Brown; in Poultney, the slate was given by Taran Brothers Slate Company; in Wells, Newmont Slate-Jack Williams donated the slate; and for Manchester’s monument, the marble came from the Dorset Historical Society.
Taran Brothers made an additional donation by cutting to size the four slate monuments.
The panels were designed by DotFour of Shaftsbury and fabricated and installed by GVH Studio of Bennington.
