This program began in 2009 and it has been a success. They typically offer between 150-200 rides home on New Year's. It has reduced the average number of DUI arrests for that evening. On New Year's Eve between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. they will be giving people a free safe and sober ride home.
Additionally, the Sheriffs will have DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols out that evening in concert with VSP, Bennington PD and Manchester PD. Anyone looking for a free ride that evening should call Bennington Taxi at 442-9052. The Sheriff's Office is accepting donations to fund this event. Anyone wishing to donate is asked to make checks payable to the Bennington County Sheriff's safe ride fund.
