Free Circus for Survivors workshops

Cancer survivors and their loved ones are invited to join a "Circus for Survivors" workshop on Sunday, Sept. 15 from 2:30 to 4:30 at the New England Center for Circus Arts (NECCA), Brattleboro.

The workshops are free and open to anyone living with a cancer diagnosis at any stage. Participants may come alone or bring a family member or friend.

The programs will include juggling, low balancing wires, aerial fabrics and trapezes. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

"The entire program was beneficial to me," said one previous participant.

"This was the most activity I participated in since I was diagnosed with cancer a year ago. It was all presented in a safe and sensible way and I was able to do more than I ever expected. It was worth the trip ten times over." "I recommend it for everyone," said another participant. "It makes you feel great. It’s a good way to work your body in a well-rounded and relaxed way without overdoing. And you get to meet some wonderful people who don’t let their cancer experience depress them." Activities will be suitable for all abilities and are wheelchair accessible.

Participants are encouraged to try the circus at the level of adventure and ability they choose.

The session will be held at NECCA at 74 Cotton Mill Hill in Brattleboro.

The sessions will be facilitated by Suzanne Rappaport, Pam Roberts and Britta Reida. Suzanne has an MS in Occupational Therapy and teaches and coaches circus arts. Pam is a certified yoga instructor and breast cancer survivor who leads workshops for people affected by cancer. Britta has been active with NECCA since 2006, as both a student and an executive board member. She is a breast cancer survivor.

Family Fitness Challenge at Bennington CrossFit

BENNINGTON -- Childhood obesity is a growing concern for many families throughout America. Though it is apparent that there is a problem, there seem to be very few resources available to help identify and correct the causes of this important issue. MOSAIC Afterschool Programs and Bennington CrossFit have partnered up to offer ten interested families at risk a chance to make positive lifestyle changes in order to confront and overcome this challenge.

Bennington CrossFit is located at 190 North St. Sept. 22 through Nov. 14; teams meet 3 times per week. Ten teams consisting of 1 adult and 1 child each will participate in this challenge; the adult must be a parent, guardian or close family member of the participating child. Participating child must be aged 11+. We will meet every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evening at Bennington CrossFit. Sunday evenings we meet at 3:15 p.m.; Sundays may be longer classes as this is the day we will perform our weekly weigh-ins and nutrition review. Tuesday and Thursday evenings we will meet at 7:15 p.m.

Howard, a staff member at the former Prospect School and founder of The Hiland Hall School, explores the fundamental applications and values of progressive thought while outlining the local historical roots of this educational practice. Berkshire Dance Theatre’s fall class registration

BENNINGTON -- The Berkshire Dance Theatre’s Fall Registration is currently underway. Classes for children, teens and adults in all ability levels are being offered. H&R Block to offer basic income tax course in Bennington

BENNINGTON -- H&R Block, the leader in the assisted tax preparation industry, has opened enrollment for its annual introductory income tax course to the public.

Classes are offered at 222 North St. They will be held Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. starting Sept. 10. The class runs twice a week into November. Total cost of the class including the $25 registration at this location will be $149. This includes all the books that are required. This fee, may be paid in installments should the student require that approach.
