BENNINGTON COUNTY -- The third annual "Shires of Vermont Marathon," a classic point-to-point 26.2 mile road race connecting the southern Vermont towns of Bennington and Manchester, is accepting registrations for Sunday, May 19, for the third annual running.
Race applications and online registration are available at www.shiresofvermontmarathon.com. The race is organized by the Batten Kill Valley Runners to benefit community mental health and developmental services.
Southwestern Vermont Medical Center is a Sustaining Sponsor once again and this year organizers expect between 400 and 600 runners.
Runners from about 30 different states and foreign countries love the course, which will be the same this year as before. It starts at The Bennington Center for the Arts and finishes at Hildene Meadows in Manchester. There will be several new twists and surprises for runners along the way, including an earlier start time at 8 a.m.
Anyone interested in helping to put on a very popular, large event is welcome to join the organizing committee, which meets monthly. "We have a couple of key spots open," Race Director Robert Pini said. "Anyone who wants to know the inside scoop on large event management should get involved."
