Benefit for Hoosick food pantry

HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- Hoosipalooza, a community celebration to support the Hoosick Falls Food Pantry, takes place today. This daylong-spirited celebration provides the community with a full itinerary of events, activities, music, and food for all ages provided by local clubs, organizations, churches, teams, and community members. All events are free, but donation jars will be present at each location with all proceeds benefiting the Hoosick Falls Food pantry. Last year’s Hoosipalooza raised over $2,000. 10 a.m. -- Violin Hour with Julia & Company at St. Mark’s Church: Be serenaded by the soothing sound of strings performed by young and local talent.

12 p.m. -- BedRun Event: A not-to-be missed event featuring bed-sled teams racing for fun, fame, and glory. Trophies awarded for fastest, funniest and most creative.

1 p.m. -- Ice Skating at the Reynolds/Gilchrest Rink: Take to the ice with friends for some classic winter fun. Skate for free between 1 and 4 p.m.

2 p.m. -- HooOwl Face Painting: Stop by the Armory for a fun and fanciful transformation. All ages welcome.

Scrapbooking Class: Join other scrappers at the Armory for some scrappy, Valentine-themed fun.

HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- The Hoosick Area Church Association is offering free assistance to the public in preparing income tax returns through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

The office at 26 John St. office will be open each Saturday beginning today from 10 to 3 p.m., and on Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. through February. In March and April, offices will be open on Saturdays from 10 to 1 p.m., and on Thursdays by appointment.

Taxpayers should bring photo identification, valid Social Security cards for the taxpayer, spouse and dependents, birth dates for primary, secondary and dependents on the tax return, current year’s tax package, if received, wage and earning statements from all employers, interest and dividend statements from banks, a copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available, bank routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit, and other relevant information about income and expenses, such as the total paid for day care and the provider’s identifying number.

The VITA program offers free assistance to those with low-to-middle incomes (wage earners who make $51,000 or less) who file Form 1040EZ, Form 1040A, or a basic 1040 Federal tax return. Most returns for both federal and state (including Vermont and Massachusetts) can be filed electronically and upon request refunds can be deposited electronically into a checking or savings account.

Annual pasta dinner

BENNINGTON -- The annual spaghetti and pasta dinner at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Parish Hall will begin at 5 p.m.

There will be several pastas, including spaghetti and meatballs, with two types of sauces, both meat and meatless, a huge salad bar with several dressings, fresh Italian bread, desserts and beverages.

Take out will be available. The cost will be adults, $10; children, $5; and a family of two adults and two children, $25.

Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Parish Hall is handicap accessible, has plenty of parking, and is located at 236 Main St. For more information, contact the parish office at 802-442-3141.

‘Miss Page Turner’ visits library

MANCHESTER -- Miss Page Turner will visit the Mark Skinner Library at 10:30 a.m. Join her for a family Valentine’s story and craft program to be held upstairs in the Children’s Room. This program is free and open to the public.

Kindergarten registration in Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- Cambridge Central School has announced plans for the kindergarten orientation process for the 2013-14 school year. Parents of children residing in the Cambridge School District who will be 5 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2013, should contact the elementary office at 518-677-8527 ext. 1416 to provide the district with the required information.

This information will assist in developing our kindergarten lists for the upcoming school year. An informational meeting intended for parents only will be held on Thursday, April 25, at 6 p.m. in the school auditorium. All parents are encouraged to attend. Registration packets and screening time slots will be available. Screening dates to be announced.
