Dinner to benefit children, Food and Fuel Fund

BENNINGTON -- Redeemer Lutheran Church will hold its annual Fall German Dinner at the Elks Lodge on Washington Avenue. For the fourth year in a row, all proceeds will be donated to Warm the Children and the Emergency Food and Fuel Fund.

The buffet-style menu includes home-made sauerbraten, spaetzle, potato pancakes, German potato salad, sauerkraut, knockwurst, bratwurst, red cabbage, carrots, apple sauce, bread, apple cider and coffee and Black Forest cake for dessert. Tickets are $15 for adults/$7 for children under 12. Take-out is available for $10/container. The dinner will feature two seatings, 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and reservations are needed. Cora B. Whitney tag sale

BENNINGTON -- The Cora B. Whitney senior facility will hold a tag sale from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 814 Gage St. A variety of items and an assortment of homemade baked goods will be sold. No early birds.

Bingo at Masonic Lodge

Defensive Driving Course offered

HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- The Northeast New York Safety and Health Council will sponsor its Defensive Driving Course at the Hoosick Falls Health Center, on Danforth Street, beginning at 8:30 a.m. promptly.

Successful completion of this class allows for 10 percent insurance reduction on collision and liability for three years, as well as reduces four points from one's driver's license on points acquired in the prior 18 months. The course fills up quickly, so register early by calling 518-686-4854.

Cambridge Valley Apple Festival

CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- The 4th Annual Cambridge Valley Apple Festival, organized by the Cambridge Valley Chamber of Commerce, is set for Oct. 6. This year's event will include apple pie contests, games, crafts, food, vendors, music, a community-wide tag sale, and sidewalk sales. Everyone is invited

‘A Night in Italy' at St. James

ARLINGTON -- St. James' Episcopal Church invites the public to attend A Night in Italy at either 5 or 7 p.m. Relax and enjoy a three-course served meal featuring an antipasto platter; bread with oil; chicken piccata with angel hair pasta, salad; tiramisu; coffee, tea and sparkling water. Seatings are at 5 and 7 p.m. The cost is $20 per person ($10 for children 12 and under). Seating is limited so reservations are strongly suggested.

New book sale room

HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- Cheney Library staff and volunteers have been working hard to create a room to be used just for the monthly book sales. Oct. 6 will be the first book sale in the new room. There is a lot more room to browse in, so there are a lot more books on the shelves. The book sale is held each month on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cheney Library is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1 to 8 p.m.; Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Giant clothing sale aids food pantry

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- A giant used and new clothing sale will be held at the St. Elizabeth of Hungary parish center (across from MASS MoCA), from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Friendship Center Food Pantry.

Opening at Harrison Gallery

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Harrison Gallery will present a solo exhibition of paintings by Jamie Young from Oct. 6 to 31. Young's paintings are described as "exuberant, translations of nature's energy put on canvas with unrestrained passion, with thick paint, quick brushstrokes and a true eye." Zion Church Blessing of the Animals

MANCHESTER CENTER -- Zion Episcopal Church, Manchester Center, invites the community to the annual Blessing of the Animals at 10 a.m.

The animals will be blessed outdoors and then may be returned to cars and the 10 a.m. Family Service will continue in the church. Columbus Day weekend Ramblefest with Greylock climb

ADAMS, Mass. -- Ramblefest will be held on Sunday, Oct. 7, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Adams Visitors Center on Hoosac Street in Adams. The free festival will feature two bands - Whiskey City and Northshire String Band. The rain date for Ramblefest will be Monday, Oct. 8. The 45th Annual Greylock Ramble takes place on Monday, Oct. 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. along the Cheshire Harbor Trail to the Summit of Mount Greylock.

SMA Cow Plop & Car Show

HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- The Saint Mary's Academy Cow Plop and Car Show will be held at the Town Athletic Fields from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Deeds may be purchased at St. Mary's Academy, or after the Saturday and Sunday masses at Immaculate Conception Church. Bennington project update

BENNINGTON -- Town of Bennington project list for week of Oct. 8 - Oct. 12 follows:

Special Note: Note to Contractors-Digging is not permitted between November 1 through April 1. Emergency digging will be allowed on a case by case basis by special permit only.

Do not rake your leaves into the town streets and highways, it clogs the drains and presents driving and flooding hazards for the community.

The Town of Bennington Transfer Station will accept leaves for no charge. If you bring in bags you must empty the bags of leaves, into the leaf and mulch pile.

Water Department: Monday - Friday - A private contractor will be starting the next phase of the water line construction on Route 67A. Work will take place between Phyllis Lane and Route 7A.

Highway Department: Monday - Cyr Court and Valentine Streets will be paved, residents of Cyr Court and Valentine Streets will have access to and from their residence; others will need to seek alternate routes of travel.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY: Union Street will be paved, any cars parked in the street from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. will be towed at owners expense.

Thursday - Friday: Crescent Boulevard, Pine Circle, and Merson Street are scheduled for paving. Local traffic will be accommodated; others will need to seek alternate routes of travel

Monday - Friday: Union Street sidewalk work will continue throughout the week. Please try and avoid the area if possible. This project is almost complete, we apologize for any inconvenience.

Please use caution, men and equipment will be in the road. All work will be dependent on weather conditions.

Third Annual Community Walk for Suicide Prevention

HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens and young adults in the U.S. Hoosick has seen its share of these tragedies over the years. This evening gives our community the opportunity to support families who have suffered from a suicide and the opportunity for suffering families to feel the communal embrace.

Last year more than 500 people participated in our second annual community suicide prevention walk. The event was very moving and meaningful to those touched directly and indirectly by suicide. Several people who tragically lost loved ones decades ago turned out to be part of this walk to save lives.

The community is invited to walk with us again on Sunday, Oct. 7, to raise awareness about depression and suicide, to advocate for mental health issues and to assist survivors of suicide loss in the recent and distant pass.

Walkers should gather in Wood Memorial Park at 5:30 p.m. where luminaries will be distributed. The walk will begin at 6 p.m. St. Mark's Church will provide a free dinner for walkers afterward.
