Wednesday and Thursday, crews will be making water line repairs on Union Street between Silver and Valentine Streets. One-lane traffic will be accommodated Wednesday. On Thursday, the road may be closed.

Wednesday a private contractor will be making water/sewer repairs on Robinson Avenue. Road closure will be necessary.

Highway Department

Crews will be painting stop bars, crosswalks, and parking stalls throughout the week. Please use caution when driving in these areas; the road may be coned to one-lane traffic without traffic control. Burgess Road will be closed throughout the week due to culvert replacement, from Barney Road to Burgess Brothers office location. Please use Gore Road as a detour. Please use caution, men and equipment will be in the road. All work will be dependent on weather conditions.

Police Brief

Attempted strong-arm robbery on School Street

BENNINGTON -- An elderly woman walking on School Street was the victim of an attempted "strong-arm robbery" Thursday, according to police.

The woman was walking near Bennington Elementary School sometime between 3 and 4 p.m. when she was approached by an older black man who demanded money and tried to snatch her purse, police said.

The woman told police that she thought several people who were leaving a nearby house scared off the assailant. Police ask anyone with information to contact the Bennington Police Department.
