I am excited to announce that I have officially entered the race for Bennington County Senator. So far the support from friends and neighbors has been outstanding. Collecting almost 200 signatures in just over a week gave me the opportunity to gather ideas and concerns from many voters. As a 34-year veteran educator I know the importance of listening. This is a skill that often goes unnoticed, but will serve me well as I introduce myself to the citizens of the county.
Those who know me best would attest to the passion I bring to anything I set out to accomplish. When I started my career as a history teacher I brought to the classroom my love for history and the responsibility everyone has to maintain our democratic system of government. For 22 years I enjoyed working with students, colleagues and parents. Over the course of those years I received two awards for outstanding teaching. As the school principal of Mount Anthony Union Middle School I expanded my enthusiasm for a quality education while addressing the need to streamline administration. By working closely with my staff and colleagues I was able to preserve educational success while cutting over half a million dollars from the school budget. The community demonstrated appreciation for my efforts by passing every annual budget submitted while I was at the helm.
Two years ago I retired from the school where I began my career in 1978. However, my passion for success continues to this day. Currently, I have the job of my dreams working part time as a tour guide at Fenway Park in Boston. This work combines my love of teaching with the opportunity to share the history of the oldest ballpark in all the major leagues. After just one month, I was awarded the Monster Customer Service Award, attesting once again to the dedication and good-natured effort I put into everything I set out to accomplish.
Today I take on the most important challenge of my life. Vermont needs new leadership, new ideas and a true commitment to address skyrocketing taxes. I am certainly up to the task and will bring my expertise, experience and most importantly my passion to the halls of the Vermont State Senate.
