BENNINGTON — The Bennington Little League 10U all-stars came into Game 3 of its 5-game series with Brattleboro on Tuesday night ready to clinch a spot in the state tournament.
It was a little more difficult then they hoped, but in the end they got it done.
After taking the first two games by large margins, Game 3, played under the lights at the Bennington Baseball Park, the Bennington kids won in walk-off fashion, 9-8, on a passed ball, to sweep the series.
Tied through the fifth inning, Brattleboro had a chance to take the lead off Bennington's third pitcher, Tanner Bushee. Brattleboro had a runner at third and two outs before Bushee induced a grounder back to himself for the final out.
In the bottom of the sixth, the first two runners, Ayman Naser and Taya Guetti, reached to make it first and third with no outs and Jesse Quinn at the plate. During Quinn's at bat, a wild pitch got past the Brattleboro catcher and Naser raced home with the series-winning run.
In the first two games, Brattleboro was held to one run by the Bennington group, but they equaled that total in the first inning on Tuesday night. Willam Thurber walked and came in on an RBI double from Brandon Weeks for a 1-0 lead. Bennington took the lead in the bottom of the inning as Carter Thompson, Bushee and Nat Greenslet all opened the game with hits. Vance Kobelia got another hit out of the No. 6 spot in the lineup for a 2-1 lead.
Bennington scored three more runs in both the second and third innings to take an 8-3 lead to the top of the fourth before Brattleboro tied the game with five runs. Hits by William Hill, Deacon Gundry and Bronson Finnell led the charge.
Bennington will travel for the state tournament in St. Johnsbury. The double elimination tournament begins on July 22.
