POWNAL -- The Pownal planning commission announced its facilitation of a voluntary scrap metal collection program, reintroduced from the initiative run by the selectboard in 2008.
The commission lists four scrap metal dealers and salvage yards that do otherwise offer collection services, and is making the notice to serve as a reminder that those services are available.
"We just made up some signage and sent notification to Rep. Botzow for his email for residents that might have this need," said Syd Smithers of the planning commission.
Any resident who wishes to sell scrap metal or abandoned vehicles on their property are able to call anyone on the list of dealers, who have agreed to work with the property owner to arrange a pick up. Dealers will pay the homeowner in cash for the value of the scrap metal.
Collectable metals include, but are not limited to copper, steel, iron and aluminum. Collectable vehicles include unregistered cars, tractors and trailers.
There are no state laws forbidding the presence of any number of abandoned vehicles or scrap metal on private properties, however is addressed in the town's bylaws but not enforced.
Scrap metals rates are at an all-time high.
Not to mention brass, copper and aluminum; vehicles with minimal rust can fetch up to $300 upon collection. Automobiles would only fetch scrap metal dealers about $100 in 2008, according to Advanced Remarketing Services.
"We hope the rising price of scrap metal will entice residents to take advantage of this service," Smithers said.
All dealers will need a signed bill of sale for untitled vehicles and scrap metal, and will need a signed certificate of title for all titled vehicles. Blank forms for a bill of sale are available at the Pownal Town Office, 467 Center St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday and Wednesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Scrap dealers include George Apkin & Sons, Inc., (413) 664-4936; Brownell's Recycling Center, (518) 686-1486; Sayers Auto Wrecking Co., (413) 443-1635; and LeBlanc's Auto Recycling and Repair for vehicles only, (802) 442-2308.
