POWNAL -- At about 7 p.m. on Tuesday Vermont State Police observed a female matching the description of a missing person emerge from a wooded area on Route 346, about 200 feet over the state line in New York, police said.

State Police contacted the woman, who verified she was Rita Sweet. She told State Police that she left her home in Pownal after a money related argument with family members. According to a police report, Sweet stated that she intended to walk to Petersburg, N.Y., to meet unspecified friends and family. She further stated that she purposely laid in the shade near the Hoosic River and slept during the heat of the day and chose to start walking when it cooled off, according to police.

Sweet was showing signs of dehydration and had several blisters on her feet but was in otherwise good health. Sweet was brought to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington for medical evaluation and there she was reunited with family members, police said.
