ST-LIBOIRE, Quebec (AP) — A man in his 40s and a one-year-old child died after their car was struck by a Via Rail passenger train at a crossing in Quebec, provincial police said Monday.

The collision happened in St-Liboire, south of Montreal. A Via spokesman said the barriers were down at the crossing and lights were flashing.

The car was sliced in half. A Quebec provincial police spokeswoman said authorities were not ruling out the possibility the driver deliberately positioned his car at the crossing.

Police did not say whether the man who died was the child's father.

Via Rail was advising there will be delays on its Montreal-Quebec City route Monday.

Police said the collision occurred at about 7:10 a.m.
