BENNINGTON - Three people were injured and a fourth refused treatment following a rollover crash on South Stream Road Thursday evening.
Bennington Police, Bennington Rescue and Bennington Rural Fire Department responded to accident scene on South Stream Road near Coleville Road at roughly 6:30 p.m. Police found victims on the ground outside the vehicle, a red 2002 Subaru Legacy, when they arrived, according to a press release issued late Thursday by the Bennington Police Department.
The preliminary investigation shows that the Subaru, which was carrying a total of four people, was driving northbound on South Stream Road at a high rate of speed, attempting to pass a white Jeep. Shane L. Wilkinson, age 20 of Bennington, who was driving the Subaru veered off the west side of the road into an alfalfa field, drove down and up a culvert, and was airborne for a distance. When the vehicle landed it rolled several times, injuring three of the four occupants, none of whom were wearing seatbelts. Wilkinson's passengers were Shawn Bulson, 18, of Bennington, Sarah Thompson, 17, of Bennington, and Jessica Gilbert, 29, of Shaftsbury.
Gilbert, who had injuries to her legs, was transported to Albany Medical Center by Bennington Rescue. Thompson and Wilkinson were taken to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center by Bennington and Pownal Rescue with non-life threatening injuries. Police said Bulson refused medical transportation.
The driver of a car headed southbound on South Stream Road witnessed the crash, which is still under investigation, police said.
"Impaired driving is not suspected in this crash, but speed is," states the release.
