BENNINGTON - State Police have named the man shot by an officer in the lobby of the Bennington Police Department Tuesday night.
Police said Gregory Filo, 42, of Bennington walked into the station's lobby at approximately 8:30 p.m., acting erratically. He had a knife, and began making stabbing motions at an acquaintance who had followed him in. Police dispatchers told officers within the building they believed Filo had stabbed the other man.
Filo brandished the knife at the officers and ignored their commands to drop the weapon as he came towards them. An officer shot Filo, striking him once. The Bennington Rescue Squad was called while police gave Filo first aid.
Police said no one besides Filo was injured during the incident. He was airlifted to Albany Medical Center in Albany, N.Y., where he is listed in stable condition.
As per Bennington Police protocol, Vermont State Police are investigating the incident. The matter has been referred to the Bennington County State's Attorney's Office and the Vermont Attorney General's Office for review, which is customary in officer-related shootings.
The officer who shot Filo is on paid administrative leave, which is also standard procedure. The officer's name is being withheld, but will be released later. The investigation is still active and more details are expected to come.
Bennington Town Manager Stuart Hurd gave a press conference Wednesday afternoon, saying, "Members of the Bennington community are safe and should feel confident going about day to day activities. As this was an isolated incident with no continuing threat."
Hurd said this is the first time Bennington Police have had to use "deadly force" in at least the 21 years he has been town manager. "This is an unusual situation for us," he said. "We generally don't see these types of events."
Hurd noted that the police station lobby is monitored by direct feed cameras in order for personnel to better see what is happening there, but the cameras do not record.
