MONTPELIER (AP) - Vermont is digging out from heavy snowfall, with some places getting more than 2 feet of snow.

The National Weather Service reports South Burlington received a little over 18 inches of snow by Thursday morning. Sharon, in Windsor County, reported the highest amount, at 26 inches. Many places reported at least a foot.

Despite those amounts, there have not been many power outages. Dorothy Schnure of Green Mountain Power said only about 340 customers remained without power as of Wednesday night. Power was restored to about 2,600 customers.

Many schools were closed.

The weather service said the snow was still falling Thursday, and was expected to taper off in the afternoon. Dangerous travel was expected, with visibilities were below a quarter of a mile with blowing and drifting snow.
