RUTLAND (AP) - Two vigils are being held in Vermont this weekend for a Poultney toddler who was allegedly killed by her stepfather.
Two-year-old Dezirae Sheldon died Feb. 21 of head injuries.
Thirty-one-year-old Dennis Duby of Poultney has pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder.
Last year, the girl's mother was convicted of cruelty to a child.
In response to her death, Gov. Peter Shumlin has ordered the Agency of Human Services to conduct an outside investigation into its handling of the case. The state Senate also has announced it is creating a special panel to review child abuse matters.
WCAX-TV reports that two vigils are planned on Saturday evening. One will take place in Rutland at Main Street Park and the other in Barre. Both start at 7:30 p.m.
