GREENWICH - Authorities say a 77-year-old man has died in a house fire in a village in eastern New York.

Officials say the fire was reported shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday at a three-story home on Route 29 in Greenwich in Washington County, 35 miles northeast of Albany.

Police on Monday identified the victim as Paul M. Parker Sr. Officials say his wife Anna escaped the blaze.

Fire departments from Greenwich and several neighboring rural towns battled the blaze, which destroyed the house.

Volunteers from the Adirondack Saratoga Chapter of the American Red Cross of NENY assisted Parker's spouse with food, clothing and bedding. In addition, they also assisted the family of three adults and one 9-year-old child who occupied the upstairs apartment, according to a press release.

Police say the fire isn't considered suspicious but the cause is under investigation.

The two homes on either side of the affected dwelling were damaged, but building inspectors allowed residents to return home Sunday night. At this point, one additional family has declined Red Cross services, but they are available to them if they change their minds. A third family was not home at the time of the fire, but will be eligible for Red Cross assistance when they return.
