MONTPELIER (AP) - The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife is offering anglers some tips about safely fishing through the ice.

The first suggestion is that anglers should leave this vehicle on shore. Every year a number of vehicles go through the ice and people have drowned as a result.

Anglers also should leave information about fishing plans with others and when they intend to return.

They also are advised to wear a personal flotation device, never fish alone and (backslash)carry a set of hand spikes that can be used to help pull themselves out of the water if they fall through the ice.

For those who use heated fishing shanties, be sure they are well ventilated to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, which can be deadly.
