SHAFTSBURY - A 5-year-old Shaftsbury boy was killed in an all-terrain vehicle crash Saturday near Hidden Valley Road, said State Police.
According to Detective Sgt. Sam Capogrossi, of the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations, police received a 911 call at approximately 7 p.m. from a person saying a 5-year-old boy was not breathing after he was injured in an all-terrain vehicle crash. Police said they performed CPR on Benjamin Lee Prouty until the arrival of the Arlington Rescue Squad, which took him to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Police said the investigation is still being conducted and no further information will be released until it is complete.
"It was a horrible accident," said Melissa Prouty, Benjamin Lee Prouty's mother, contacted Monday by phone. "His wheel got caught and the four-wheeler flipped on top of him."
She said in an interview Monday that her son was riding a child-sized ATV on a trail at the family's property. The trail is about 150 yards long, and the boy was wearing a helmet and chest protector. The family realized something was wrong when he had gone out on the trail and not returned for a while.
"He was doing what he loved," she said, adding that her son had ridden the trail many times before.
According to the boy's obituary, "During his short five years he lived life to the fullest; he loved anything with a motor including riding his ATV and snowmobiling, he also liked building with Legos.
