Teen dies in crash

SHELDON (AP) -- Vermont State Police say a car crash in the town of Sheldon has killed a 16-year-old passenger.

Investigators say the driver, 17-year-old Tristan Cameron of St. Albans, lost control of the car after failing to safely negotiate a corner at about 2 p.m. Thursday. The car was struck on the passenger side by an oncoming Dump truck.

Cameron suffered minor injuries. His passenger, Tyler Rheaume of Sheldon, was taken to Fletcher Allen Medical Center and died early Friday.

Police are investigating the crash.

Unemployment rate up

MONTPELIER (AP) -- Vermont’s unemployment rate climbed to 4.4 percent in June, the second consecutive month-to-month increase.

The June seasonally-adjusted rate climbed three-tenths of a percentage point, after climbing one-tenth of a percentage point from April to May.

The comparative national rate in June was 7.6 percent, which was unchanged from May.

Despite the increase, Vermont’s unemployment rate remained the fourth lowest in the country.

Court: Sawmill exempt

MONTPELIER (AP) -- The Vermont Supreme Court has upheld a lower court’s ruling that sawmill operations on a Pomfret farm are part of the farming operations and therefore exempt from local zoning.

In a decision issued Friday, the high court ruled for siblings David Moore, John Moore and Emily Grube, who operate a farm where they do sugaring, logging and other activities.
