BENNINGTON - The Bennington School District budget was rejected by voters 915-1,095.
In a three-way race for the BSD school board challenger Kelly Kennedy received 1,218 votes and incumbent Jackie Prue took the other seat with 876 votes. Finishing third was challenger Jackie Kelly who received 808 votes.
The proposed fiscal year 2014 budget would have been a 19 percent increase in spending from the current year's budget. The increase was
largely due to increased special education needs and a loss in federal funding. However it also included $30,000 to repay interest on a bond the district is considering for an addition to Bennington Elementary. The proposed addition itself has been criticized, and the board also caught flak for including a line item in the budget to begin repayment on the bond that has yet to be voted on at the floor meeting Monday by Bennington Town Clerk Timothy Corcoran.
