PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Mount Anthony Union High School wrestling team capped off their milestone 25th straight state championship year with a run-away victory at the New England wrestling tournament on Saturday.
Senior Miguel Calixto and junior Jesse Webb each won regional championships and on the strength of three finalists and four place-finishers, MAU won its seventh New England title and first since 2004.
MAU scored 109 points, well ahead of Timberlane's 69.5 and Exeter-West Greenwich, R.I.'s 64.5. North Andover and Dracut, Mass. were fourth and fifth.
The Patriots also snapped Timberlane's five-year New England winning streak.
"People keep asking me how it feels and it's awesome. It's been nine years since we won a New England title," said Mount Anthony coach Scott Legacy with a big smile. "Ending their streak isn't as important as the fact that we won one. I'm just ecstatic for this group of kids. I hope the smile explains it all."
Troy Gassaway finished runner-up at 113 pounds, while Austin Price was fourth-place at 182 pounds.
The trio of Gassaway, Calixto and Webb were the first Mount Anthony wrestlers to reach the finals since Corey Greene won a New England title in 2006.
