STAMFORD - An 18-year-old woman is facing charges after police said she hosted an underage drinking party at her parents' home while they were in Florida.

Vermont State Police Trooper Christopher Burnett said state police and Bennington County Sheriff's Department deputies went to a home on Nichols Road Friday in response to a report of underage drinking. Police found Laura Kirby, 18, and 40 other people, some of whom attempted to hide, at the home. Kirby told police the home belongs to her parents who were scheduled to return that evening.

Police initially cited 20 people for underage alcohol consumption, but as police were leaving a vehicle arrived at the home with three more people under 21 who had either consumed or were in possession of alcoholic beverages.

Police said the 23 were given referrals to the diversion program for first-time offenders.

Kirby was cited to appear in Bennington Superior Court Criminal Division on Dec. 10 to answer a charge of enabling alcohol consumption by minors.
