SHAFTSBURY -- A Bennington woman who told police she swerved off the road to avoid a deer was cited for driving while under the influence Thursday.

Amy Forrest, 35, was driving along White Creek Road at 6:26 p.m. on Nov. 1, police said, when her vehicle went off the roadway, rolling over and coming to a rest in the woods.

Forrest told police she swerved for a deer and lost control, but police said their investigation determined Forrest was under the influence, and she was subsequently arrested and charged with DUI. Authorities reported wet, rainy conditions at the time. Police did not report any injuries but the 2004 Kia was considered a total loss.
