BENNINGTON - An elderly woman was killed Thursday morning in a two-vehicle, head-on crash on Harwood Hill.

The crash, reported around 11:20 a.m., occurred several hundred yards north of Houghton and Rice Lanes. Ruth Cherbonneau, 86, of Arlington, died from injuries she sustained in the crash, Bennington Police Lt. Lloyd Dean said. Edward Legacy, 69, of Shaftsbury, was struck by Cherbonneau and suffered minor injuries. He was driving a 2002 Chevrolet pickup.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, Dean said.

Both vehicles had serious front-end damage and ended up in a ditch along the northbound lane. The truck was facing north, while the Civic faced south.

A helicopter was initially called to the scene to airlift Cherbonneau but was eventually canceled. She was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of internal injuries, according to Dean. She appeared to have suffered fractures to both legs and wrists, he said.
