WOODFORD - A Bennington man is facing his fourth charge of driving while under the influence of alcohol after police say he crashed his vehicle early Thursday morning on Route 9 near the Rock Cut.

According to state police, John Winney, 45, called them 20 minutes after midnight to report that he had crashed his 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, but was uninjured.

Police said they found the vehicle, which had sustained heavy front-end damage and was missing a tire, in a drainage ditch. Winney was found with the help of a K-9 unit in the woods nearby, according to police.

The Bennington Police Department and Bennington Fire Department assisted with the crash scene. Police said Winney is scheduled to appear in Bennington Superior Court Criminal Division at a later date.
