BENNINGTON -- Bennington Police are questioning a local man they say intended to make methamphetamine, after authorities received a complaint of suspicious chemicals at the property.
Police responded Monday evening around 8 p.m. to an apartment on the 200 block of School Street. Lt. Lloyd Dean said police were granted access to the apartment and saw what they believed to be materials and equipment that could be used to make the drug.
Dean said officers immediately withdrew from the apartment, shut down the street and evacuated other nearby residents.
Dean said the tenant, a man in his 20s, is cooperating with police. Some "key ingredients" were missing to make drug, he said. However, the man indicated he was planning to make drugs.
"He has informed us of the chemicals that are in the apartment. They are volatile chemicals when they are mixed together," Dean said. "He does have a desire to make methamphetamine."
The chemicals were secured. A state hazardous materials team will take possession of the chemicals, according to Dean.
"Everything, from what we've been told, is secure. There is no danger to the public at this time," he said.
Vermont State Police Lt. Reginald Trayah, head of the VSP's Clandestine Lab Task Force, was on scene and police were determining how to proceed as of press time. Charges are pending, Dean said.
Fire and rescue personnel were also on scene because of the volatile nature of the chemicals, Dean said.
