WINHALL -- A moose was killed on Routes 11 and 30 after it was struck by two cars Thursday night.
Winhall Police Sgt. Thomas Crowe said 25-year-old Carley M. Schwartz of Bondville struck the moose first with her 2003 Toyota Camry just after 11 p.m. He said the large moose was crossing the road when Schwartz, who was driving eastward, collided with it, causing major damage to the windshield and side of the vehicle.
The moose was thrown into the roadway, where it was struck by a 1995 Saab driven by 26-year-old Jared Mailhiot of Belmont. Mailhiot, who was driving a short distance behind Schwartz, slowed down because of Schwartz’s vehicle on the side of the road. But he did not see the moose in time to avoid it and struck it again, Crowe said.
Both drivers escaped without serious injury; the moose died at the scene, Crowe said.
The Manchester Police Department and the Vermont Fish and Game Department assisted Winhall Police at the scene.
Crowe said drivers should be cautious when traveling on dark, rural roads at this time of year because of the increasing population of moose and deer that are moving at night.
