MONTPELIER (AP) -- The Republican candidate for governor of Vermont says he would support construction of a new nuclear plant on the grounds of the Vermont Yankee reactor in Vernon.

State Sen. Randy Brock says he’d like to see a nuclear plant that could reprocess and reuse its own nuclear waste. Fuel reprocessing currently is used in some countries, but not the United States.

Gov. Peter Shumlin says he would not support a new reactor in Vernon. Shumlin also says it would be impractical because it would take 15 years to cool down and dismantle the existing Vermont Yankee plant.

The exchange came during the first debate of the 2012 gubernatorial campaign, broadcast Wednesday evening on Vermont Public Radio.
