BENNINGTON - The Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union is moving closer to naming people to several key positions.
The SVSU has completed interviews for its director of human resources position, and has determined a tentative final candidate, Superintendent Catherine McClure announced during the SVSU Personnel Committee meeting Thursday. In addition, the supervisory union has been collecting applications for the superintendent's job that will become available when McClure retires next year. The deadline for submitting applications for that position was Friday.
Applications for the human resources position were pre-screened, leading to a final pool of seven candidates. An interview committee made up of teachers and administrators interviewed the candidates and recommended a final candidate. That candidate will be announced and recommended to the SVSU board at its meeting on Nov. 21.
The screening committee for the superintendent applications will be made up of board members, principals, teachers, office personnel, parents, and community members. The submitted package r equired by each candidate includes a cover letter, resume, certifications, transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. Once a candidate is chosen, the SVSU will vote on whether to hire the chosen person. The screening process will go on throughout November. The earliest a hiring could occur is January, although several board members expressed skepticism that a superintendent would be in place by then.
George Sleeman, vice chairman of the Bennington District School Board, expressed misgivings about hiring a director of human resources without the input of the incoming superintendent. McClure responded that much of the paperwork on her desk right now would fall under the purview of the new HR director, and the new superintendent would benefit from having someone in the position of the HR director, and familiar with the position, before he or she begins as superintendent.
The personnel committee was also presented with a new organizational chart, which is scheduled to be approved at the Nov. 21 meeting. The committee then w ent into executive session to discuss administrative compensation and contracts.
