SHAFTSBURY -- State Police said a set of aluminum bleachers were destroyed and soccer nets turned over sometime over the weekend at Howard Park. Police received the complaint at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Vermont State Trooper Thomas Stange at 802-442-5421. Tips can be sent anonymously to http://dps.vermont.gov/ or by texting to the number 274637 (CRIMES) the keyword "VTIPS" followed by the tip.

Security at the town-owned park has been an issue discussed by the Select Board. Board Chairman Craig Bruder said it is likely the board will talk about this latest incident at its next meeting. He said it's probable the park will have to be closed in the evenings, possibly earlier than people would like, as finding volunteers to open and close it has not been easy.

The discussions were prompted by members of the Norshaft Lions, who told the board their group wishes to spend funds to improve the park but not if what they do is likely to be destroyed by vandals.

"Our thoughts are when Shaftsbury comes up with a serious solution we will talk to them and may invest some money up there," said Art Whitman, a member of the Norshaft Lions Board of Directors.

Town Administrator Margy Becker said Monday she does not yet have an estimate on the damage in terms of money but is working on getting one to make an insurance claim.
