NORTH BENNINGTON -- On Saturday, March 30, harpsichordist Charles Metz of Saint Louis will present a program of English and Italian music from the 16th and 17th centuries at the North Bennington Station. Playing an instrument built and decorated by master craftsmen Walter and Berta Burr of Hoosick, New York, Metz, who has played several times in the area before, will perform works by Randall, Byrd, Dowland, Tisdale and others. The concert is free. The performance will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Charles Metz studied piano at Penn State University, and began his harpsichord studies with the legendary Igor Kipnis. He holds a Ph.D. in Historical Performance Practice from Washington University, in Saint Louis, where he studied with Trevor Pinnock. More recently he has worked with Webb Wiggins and Lisa Crawford at the Oberlin Conservatory.

Metz plays regularly in Saint Louis with ensembles including The Bach Society of Saint Louis, Collegium Vocale, Saint Louis Baroque and Such Sweete Melodie. He appears regularly in Kansas City with the Kansas City Baroque Consortium and as solo and continuo keyboardist and faculty at the annual Jewell Early Music Summer Festival.

Charles Metz has performed across the country with recent concerts in Chicago, Saratoga, and Louisville. In 2010, he performed a solo recital at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., and in 2011 a solo recital and master class on Elizabethan Virginal Music at the Oberlin Conservatory.

Metz's international appearances include performances in The Netherlands, Germany and Costa Rica. He recently recorded the Tisdale Virginal Book, a collection of Elizabethan keyboard music, on his 400-year-old Italian virginal, restored by the Burrs. The CD is scheduled for release later this year. In 2012 Metz joined the board of directors of Early Music America.

The concert is organized by the Bennington Cultural and Arts Council in collaboration with Paran Recreations, with assistance from Stewart's, and the cooperation of the Village of North Bennington.
